If you want to get tested for a tattoo ink allergy, that's usually the dermatologist or allergist, not the studio. The usual thing is an epicutaneous patch test, a plaster test. Ask the studio first which inks they use, and bring the actual bottle or the data sheet to the appointment. If you're not sure, getting it checked is definitely worth it.

How the tattoo allergy test actually works at the doctor

In Germany you go to a dermatologist or an allergy clinic. Your GP can refer you, but they rarely test the ink themselves. Get the bottle or the safety data sheet from the studio first. Without that batch, the clinic often runs a standard series, not your ink.

If it sounds like a contact allergy, the fit is an epicutaneous patch test. Patches go on the back. Readings are typically at 48 and 72 hours, sometimes again on day 8 to 10. A prick test is for immediate stuff like pollen or food. Wrong test for pigments sitting in the skin.

Even a clean patch test is not the same as getting tattooed. The ink later sits in the dermis, not only on the surface. Pigments can still change in the body. That's why a tattoo ink allergy often shows weeks or months after the session, not in the test week.

Since January 2022, REACH Annex XVII entry 75 limits substances in tattooing mixtures. The German BfR says in its tattoo product FAQ (2025) that there is no positive list of safe inks. Nickel has to be labelled when the limit is exceeded. Vegan ink only means no animal ingredients, not no allergens.

Getting a tiny point tattooed and waiting three days. The ink is already in the skin. If it flares, your test is the problem.

Wiping ink on the skin and adding a plaster. Surface contact tells you nothing about pigment in the dermis.
