1. Pick the style Write down what you want before you search. City first and “they do everything” is the fastest way to the wrong artist.
2. Check the portfolio Several pieces in the same style, healed if you can. One fresh Instagram shot and otherwise something else is not enough.
3. Use ratings only to shortlist Reviews are a start, not proof. Ask people you know about healed skin, or walk in yourself.
4. Visit the studio Clean station, time for questions, fresh gloves and single-use gear in sight. A kitchen or living room is a no.
5. Read the price A minimum price is normal because setup and hygiene cost money. 35 euros for a design or a hobby at home is a warning, not a deal.
6. Treat the consult as the test You can change the draft and the artist can say no. Pressure to tattoo now, no talk: leave.

How you spot a good artist without a ranking

In Germany, tattooer is not a state-regulated trade. A business registration and a hygiene plan they can explain is the baseline, not a bonus. Ask whether the studio works to DIN EN 17169. That is a question for the studio, not a tathood seal.

The German BVL says in its tattoo product FAQ: single-use needles, ink from fresh cups, sterile water, a clean surface. ZDF heute uses the same quick check and advises against getting tattooed on the first visit. That is a visitor view, not a diagnosis.

Finding a tattoo studio and finding a tattoo artist are not the same. The shop can be clean and the person at the machine still the wrong style. DOT membership is a hygiene signal in the ZDF piece, not a must and not a ranking.
